acidosis

Acidosis is a condition in which there is too much acid in the body fluids. It is the opposite of alkalosis (a condition in which there is too much base in the body fluids).
Example: The pH level of 7.130 indicates an ACIDOSIS a raised pCO 2 of 20.57kPa.

aneurysm
noun
An aneurysm is a ballooning at a weak spot in an artery wall. An aneurysm's walls can be thin enough to rupture. The illustration shows a woman with an unruptured aneurysm. The inset shows typical aneurysm swelling.
Example: The patient was 20 months old from ruptured aortic ANEURYSM.

noun
A condition marked by severe pain in the chest, often also spreading to the shoulders, arms, and neck, caused by an inadequate blood supply to the heart.
Example: He had high blood pressure and he suffered from ANGINA.

Any of the muscular-walled tubes forming part of the circulation system by which blood (mainly that which has been oxygenated) is conveyed from the heart to all parts of the body.
Example: The operation will be performed on her left carotid ARTERY.

cardiac arrest
noun
A sudden, sometimes temporary, cessation of function of the heart.
Example: Mrs was in a similar position and at risk of a CARDIAC ARREST.

cardiopulmonary resuscitation
noun
A medical procedure involving repeated compression of a patient's chest, performed in an attempt to restore the blood circulation and breathing of a person who has suffered cardiac arrest.
Example: She could have administered CPR until the ambulance arrived. When a person's heart and breathing stops it's sometimes possible to restart the heart using cardiopulmonary resuscitation ( CPR ).

catheter
noun
a flexible tube inserted through a narrow opening into a body cavity, particularly the bladder, for removing fluid.
Example: IV fluids and the PCA were stopped. The CATHETER was also removed.

diaphoresis
noun
sweating, especially to an unusual degree as a symptom of disease or a side effect of a drug.
Example: Fever, DIAPHORESIS, and tachycardia were controlled on the second day. Then, as the body temperature falls, profound diaphoresis begins. The victim would be diaphoretic and exhausted, his flesh mangled and ripped, and would crave water because of the loss of fluid from bleeding and diaphoresis.

glucagon
noun
a hormone formed in the pancreas which promotes the breakdown of glycogen to glucose in the liver.
Example: Respiratory failure would promote secretion of GLUCAGON cortisol and catecholamines.

A covering for the hand worn for protection against cold or dirt and typically having separate parts for each finger and the thumb.
Example: Health care workers involved in the direct care of patients should use the following PPE: gowns, GLOVES, medical mask, and eye protection (goggles or face shield).

noun
The pulsation of the heart.
Example: His heartbeat quickened as Rose approached.

An institution providing medical and surgical treatment and nursing care for sick or injured people.
Example: Chest pain (silent ischemia) upon arrival at the HOSPITAL.

Each of the pair of organs situated within the rib cage, consisting of elastic sacs with branching passages into which air is drawn, so that oxygen can pass into the blood and carbon dioxide be removed. Lungs are characteristic of vertebrates other than fish, though similar structures are present in some other animal groups.
Example: Smoking predisposes you to LUNG cancer.

A covering made of fiber or gauze and fitting over the nose and mouth to protect against dust or air pollutants, or made of sterile gauze and worn to prevent infection of the wearer or (in surgery) of the patient.
Example: Personal Protective equipment: Provide face MASK body cover and gloves.

A person trained to give emergency medical care to people who are injured or ill, typically in a setting outside of a hospital.
Example: All ambulances were manned by a nurse or paramedic and a driver.

A vehicle specially equipped for taking sick or injured people to and from the hospital, especially in emergencies.
Example: We called an AMBULANCE.

Example: Pupillary reflex occurs with darkening the room and shining a PEN-LIGHT directly into the neonate's eye for several seconds.

A person receiving or registered to receive medical treatment.
Example: Many patients in the hospital were more ill than she was.

noun
An N95 filtering facepiece respirator, commonly abbreviated N95 respirator, is a particulate-filtering facepiece respirator that meets the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health N95 classification of air filtration, meaning that it filters at least 95% of airborne particles.
Example: If properly fitted, the filtration capabilities of N95 RESPIRATORS exceed those of face masks.

semi-automatic defibrilator
noun
A Semi-Automated External Defibrillator is used by lay responders to treat someone in cardiac arrest. The user pushes. the on button, pulls a handle or opens the lid and the AED starts to talk to you. The user will open the pads and place them on the patient as indicated by pictures on the pads.
Example: The person using the SEMI-AUTOMATIC DEFIBRILLATOR will look to be sure no one is touching the patient, and when safe will push the shock button.

tourniquet
noun
A device for stopping the flow of blood through a vein or artery, typically by compressing a limb with a cord or tight bandage.
Example: Pre prep in anaesthetic room, TOURNIQUET used to minimise blood loss during procedure.
